Hearing a tom answer your hen talk is what gets our blood pumping. For those of you that love to call, this article is for you. We’re talking about mimicking an excited hen turkey and boy does it work.
Learning the call
To mimick an excited hen yelp you’ve got to put feeling into your calling. Some will confuse “feeling” with volume and that’s not what we’re going for. Calling loud to a nearby tom can send him heading the other direction. Practice a standard yelp on your favorite call. Then pick up the pace just a tad. Add in some cutting and pauses between yelps. A hen will often call soft for her first series and bring the volume up if she doesn’t get a response.

Notice as he’s yelping there is a pause between each call. A hen turkey will do this as she’s trying to listen for an answer from another turkey. If a gobbler does answer, hit him again with even more excitement.
I’ve had great luck using the excited hen yelp but only in moderation. Maybe try it for a couple series to get the gobbler fired up then shut up completely. This technique works great on hung up toms. Call aggressively then wait them out. He might just come in to see where his girlfriend went.
